Ripon Community Poppy Project
June 6th 2024 marks the 80th Anniversary of the ‘Operation Overlord’ D-Day Landings.
We have a series of events and displays planned for the City of Ripon.
80th Anniversary of D-Day & 75th Anniversary of the Royal Engineers Freedom of the City Concert
7pm on 6th June – Ripon Cathedral
Ripon City Band, The Duchy Belles, The Dishforth Military Wives Choir,
and Charlotte Potter will be performing in our fabulous cathedral.
Our life-size Churchill Tank and knitted decorations around the city
Our full sized knitted Churchill AVRE Tank has been revealed at an event held at The Ripon Inn. We also previewed our knitted decorations which will be displayed around Ripon in the lead up to the anniversary.
It will be at the Ripon Inn until 9th May, then on display around Ripon at the following venues:
• 10th May to 23rd May – Tates Nursery
• 24th May to 4th June – Fountains Abbey
• 5th & 6th June – Ripon Cathedral forecourt
• 8th & 9th June – Tractorfest at Newby Hall

National Beacon Lighting Ceremony
9.15pm on 6th June – Ripon Cathedral forecourt
We are delighted to announce Jack Churchill (Sir Winston Churchill’s great grandson) will be lighting the beacon on the City’s behalf as part of a national event when 80 beacons will be lit across the country.
The beacon lighting will be live-streamed in to the Cathedral during the concert.
Ripon D-Day Hero Hunt
30th April – 15th June 2024
In partnership with Ripon BID, local businesses will display a knitted soldier, sailor or airman in their ground-floor window and be listed on the Hero Hunt trail sheet.
Printed forms will be available from G Graggs, Ripon Library, The Wakeman’s House or the Ripon BID office.
The figures will be displayed from 30th April until 15th June and completed trail sheets will be entered into a draw to win cash prizes.
